BATTLE THE ‘SUMMER SLIDE’

DID YOU KNOW that when students don’t read over the long summer break they are likely to fall behind when they return to school in the new year? We call this the ‘Summer Slide’. Make it a priority at your school to keep students’ minds sharp and active. Encourage them to read for at least 10 minutes every day during the break with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Visit scholastic.co.nz/summer to find out more and sign up.

Brooke's Amazing Visitor

Yesterday we were incredibly lucky to have Brooke's homework hero Patrick Nolan visit our class. Mr Nolan has had a very busy life. He left school and joined the army, training in carpentry. He went to war in Vietnam. Mr Nolan stayed with the NZ army for another 25 years. After leaving he went to Antarctica and worked the summer season there. Mr Nolan was then invited to go to England and work as a Yeoman Warden in the Tower of London! He lived within these tower walls with his wife for the next 8 years. His job has many aspects. He looked after the 3 million plus annual tourists, guarded the priceless crown jewels, and worked as a body guard to the queen. Patrick was the first and only non-British person to have the privilege of this role. Mr Nolan had a host of medals, a beautifully crafted uniform and a huge range of interesting stories. He was a wonderful guest. Thank you Brooke!

Ashley's Hero

Ashley chose Levi Sherwood as her homework hero. She got to meet him! He is an amazing Moto X rider who performs with the Crusty Demons.

While the Yr 6's were away...

The Yr 5's most certainly did not play (much!)
Ms Robertson put them through their paces with a pack of cards, push ups, crunches, jumping jacks and lunges. When everyone was red and puffing we played a couple of co-operative games. A fun fitness session, great exercise!

Terrible technique Yr 5's! Where are the flat bodies?

Ms Robertson and her wicked cards of exercise...

Much better technique here!

Mr Cribb put us to shame, he was awesome!

Happy Halloween

Between returning home from camp and building up to the World Cup final, Halloween was slightly overlooked in my house. However not at Holly and Jorja's house. Check out their very scary zip faces and the 100 delicious cup cakes their Mum made. What an amazing effort!

Artic Swimming

Some people like to swim in sun warmed water, slightly heated for a relaxing and refreshing dip. Not the toughies from the Senior Team! Rain, shine, over cast and unheated, they were in the pool and loving it. Excellent resilience and attitude Seniors, way to go!

Activity: Mud Slide

Just like the warm, healthy healing mud in Rotarua, camp also offered a mud experience. The only difference being it was smelly, cold, fast, bumpy, scary and fast! Thanks to John who spent nearly all his time supervising this activity.

Activity: Water slide

It was a quick, nail biting ride of terror resulting in a sound soaking in the murky, weed covered water below. Once you started there was no changing your mind! The water slide was quick and ultra slippery. Many braved it and had success, some riding it over 20 times! Mr Ward led the adult charge and was followed by many other brave parents.
Thanks to Super Nurse Amanda who spent a lot of time up on the windy platform supervising the fun.

Activity: Gladiator

A fight that's been sanctioned by our teachers? Crazy but true, we were all looking forward to the Gladiator. Up in the air, balancing on a beam, having a large battering stick, held up by harnesses, trying to get our buddy off- what fun!
Thanks to Daniel, (Fight name Dan the Man!) who was at the end of his tether, literally, supporting all the kids through every Gladiator rotation.
I'm the king of the world...

Activity: Confidence Course

Thrills, not many spills, high wires, adrenaline, it was all here at the confidence course. It was really enjoyable seeing nervous children face their fears and succeed. I also enjoyed all the clever ways children achieved the different obstacles. Lots of thinking outside the square and plenty of team support!
