Mrs Palmer brought in a well eaten swan plant that had a monarch chrysalis on it. We were hoping to see it hatch and then fly. Unfortunately the butterfly was shy and hatched in the weekend. We did get to see it today though as we set it free into the wet weather of Feilding.
Something we discussed as a class though was a well known and beloved childhood book is inaccurate! Most of us had read and enjoyed 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' as children. In this book by Eric Carle the caterpillar goes into a cocoon and then hatches as a butterfly. We discovered that moths have cocoons and butterflies have chrysalises.
However it is a wonderful book that has been hugely successful.
