Teach the teacher

On Tuesday 30th of June I, AKA D'Shae, modelled to the class how to make a parachute. If you want to make one of my parachutes this is how !!!.

Step 1: Get all of the stuff you need to make it: plastic bag, string, a nut/ weight.

Step 2: Make the string even on all sides and cut out a square from your plastic bag. Put a small hole in each corner, but not too big.

Step 3: Tie the string onto each corner. now the nut will go on the end of the string. Just remember to tie it really tight.

Yay,  you made it! Have fun!!!.

My uncle matts painting of me

This is a painting of me when I was 3 . I was sitting on my water seal and I was in a bad mood. So my dad took a picture of me and sent it to my Uncle Matt. He's an artist. Once we sent it the magic begun. All he did was draw me with a fat vivid then instead of painting he used a stamp with my birthday on it. Every artist has a symbol. My uncles symbol is 66 it's in the corner of my painting.
This is the photo he copied.

Matariki stars

Today, Room T had a very lovely visit from Tracy who told us all a Matariki myth about some brothers who were jealous of their sibling's Matariki star, which he polished and polished until it shone in the sky like a mini sun. One night the other brothers planned to steal Matariki's star. They didn't notice that a piwakawaka (fantail) was hiding in a nearby tree. As soon as the brothers left, the young fantail fluttered off and told Matariki that they were going to steal his precious star.  Matariki ran to hide his star. His brothers became extremely mad so they threw rocks at Matariki's star and it shattered into small pieces. The sky dimmed so the people of the village became more and more worried. Were they ever going to see their favourite star again? What happened to it? The sky cleared and the people became happy again because they could all see the stars. And now Matariki had seven stars to look after and polish. After the story had finished we made our very own stars out of our NZ native flax. We all hope you enjoyed reading this blog post.

Tech the teacher dingoes

Hi I'm Nikitah and yesterday I did Teach the teacher to the class and Ms Ellis. I did it on dingoes. Now I am going to share 3 interesting facts about dingoes. One of them is this, the healthy adult dingo takes the responsibility to keep the old and weak animals away from food and water so they can die quickly. Here is my second fact, Dingoes were brought into Australia about 5,000 years ago. Last but not least, dingo pups fight to see who will be the strongest when the leader of the pack when the leader dies. Thats my 3 fact about dingoes.

Ocean Currents Experiment

This experiment models how the ocean currents work. All you need is 2 glass jars the same size, some pieces of card, salt, food colouring and a plastic tray. What happens, well, when the salt water was placed on top, the water in the two jars mixed together. This is because salt water is denser (heavier) than freshwater. This partly simulates how the worlds ocean currents operate! By Ella

ICE SKATING SIMULATION

Have you ever wondered why your ice skates seem to glide through ice? well what happens is the ice skates really melt the ice making water slippery enough to slide upon. This is exactly what we experienced in this photo!

Hydrothermal Vents Experiment

Hydrothermal Vents: To do this experiment you will need a large bowl/bucket, cold water (that represents the ocean), hot water (that represents the hot water under the ocean, created by the hot vents), food colouring (so you can see all the magic happen) and a small container with a hole in the lid (that represents the vents in the earth's crust under the ocean). If you do this experiment you will see that hot water rises, because hot water is lighter than cold water. This experiment simulates what happens in the ocean with the hydrothermal vents.

Shifting The Scaffolding

After weeks of  repairing the leaky buildings, the scaffolding finally came down. By using a massive crane the scaffolding got shifted off the staff room roof, next the scaffolding will be shifted over to the office and the library. After those rooms have been completed, Room D,G,F,and E will be repaired.

Siphoning

Do you have an aquarium or fish tank that needs emptying?

The first thing you need to do is fill a pipe or a hose with water. Then place one end of the hose in the aquarium and the other end where you want the water to go but remember keep the side where you want the water to go lower than the end in the aquarium. Gravity is the force that causes the water to travel down and as the hose is full of water this creates suction allowing you to easily empty most of the water.

My class had to come up with a solution for  getting round on duty for Mrs Palmer when she was tired...Here it is! Good thinking Sienna and Brooke.

Our Leaders have bright futures!

Possibly the worst picture ever, sorry Leaders! (A good case for arguing for some quality cameras for your lovely teachers?) Late photo from Leadership day. Great day, even greater group! :)

Teach The Teacher

My Made-up Language
Last Friday, on Enviro day, I was the teacher. I taught Room H the made-up language I learnt. The words are:
Lawson Lawson  bo bawson
Banana fanna fo fawson
Fi fo fo fawson.
Lawson!

I really enjoyed everyone singing it in tune because it has this kind of rhythm I really like. I think Ms. Todd and Room H liked it too.                    Lawson

Teach the teach compressed air cannon

Josh was Teaching the teacher something that certainly surprised her.

I made this compressed air cannon with a bit of help from my dad. As you pump the pressure builds up  in the chamber. Then you turn the tap and release the pressure and it fires a nerf bullet or a bb bullet. I like to  pump it up to 30 to 50 psi. 30 psi is the same as one car tyre. If you dont know what psi means I will tell you. psi meanpounds   per square Inch  (measure of pressure). Parts of the cannon are: pump ,valve ,chamber ,tap and  barrel.

Enviro Kids thinking outside of the box?!

In the Senior School we pride ourselves on our clever students who are creative and thoughtful. Alex and Monty demonstrate some of this 'Thinking outside (or inside) the box'!

Fish on the loose...

Keep an eye out. Slowly but surely (weather dependent) all of our outside drains will be labeled with a fish and the words 'Tip No Waste'. We managed to spray 3 on our very wet Enviro Action Day and the rest will happen this Wednesday.

Nathan's Big Adventure

Last Wednesday I brought in my treasures from my trip to Hawaii. I went to Oahu. My family went because we were going to my Uncle's wedding. We went to a market and there were a lot of illegal weapons like knuckle dusters. There are 10 different islands that make up Hawaii. Maori people originated from these islands. Hawaii is the biggest island. There were turtles on the islands. One of the turtles called Louie had a white stripe on it's back because it was hit by a boat which cracked it's shell. There were little ducklings in the crocodile habitat and little terrapins (turtles).

Alex brings a scary treasure...

On Wednesday Alex brought a very scary bottle to school! It was a bottle of medicine from Vietnam! But it contained a real snake! It was a King Cobra. We weren't sure that we would enjoy taking that medicine?

Teach The Teacher

Meerkat poster. On Monday I had to  teach the teacher  and the class about something . So I taught them about meerkats, my second favourite animal . They learnt  alot! (They're so cute). Here's a few quick facts.... For meerkats sticking together is a way of life, on their front paws meerkats have long curved claws that they use for digging ,meerkats use their slender tails to support balance, a large den may have as many as 15 entrances . I enjoyed sharing my information about meerkats. By Gracie.

Teach The Teacher

Alex was the teacher in Room H today. He shared his knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. Hear how to count to ten with Alex's excellent tuition!

The crowd goes wild.

With excitement the crowd went wild at netball because I was a fantastic player. I got the player of the day and that is why I said I was a fantastic player. We got six points and Halcombe Black only got two or three points because they weren't very good at playing netball but  Manchester  street school three is good at netball  because we do a lot of passes and bounce passes. We got taught  by Ms Ellis she is MSS3  coach and my mum B.j is our manager.

On my ukulele

We did a performance in class. We'll done girls

Red part of the rainbow.

We have been sharing some positive things about each other. Sitting on the HOT SPOT is a chance to hear everyone say lovely things about yourself.

Winter Warmers has begun

Guess who is Super Excited that he is in our class and that we have our new Winter Warmers books?
I wonder what he is going to put in as the snap shot scene from our class novel  "Elephants In The Garden" by Michael Morpurgo.
Ms Ellis has explained to the class about quality work and having all the information needed. Mrs Hogan is going to be really impressed.

Cloud in a jar                                                                                                                                              You need a jar, ice cubeswater and a steel lid. Fill the bottom of the jar with water to the depth of one or two cm. This is the ocean. Turn the metal lid upside down and place on top of the jar. This is the sky. Place three ice cubes on top of the lid. The sky is cold because it is up so high. After about ten minutes, lift the lid off and observe the underside. The water will have evaporated and condensation has formed under the lid. This is how clouds are formed in the cold sky.

Room T's Science Experiments

In Room T,we have been conducting science experiments on water and water vapour. The science experiments Room T conducted were: Make *Condensation in a jar, Make condensation on a window,*Purifying water and Making drinkable water out of dirty water. The ingredients and tools we used were: Food colouring, dirt/mud,an egg shaped stone, glad wrap, a glass ,a window, lots of ice cubes, jars with steel lids, water and a glass bowl. Room T got the experiments from our zero waste booklets. Here are some pictures of the progress.

Our water expirment

This is our awesome water experiment. It's a mini water cycle. First we put dirt in a glass bowl. Second we filled the bowl with up with  water (and added plenty of mud...) and then we covered the bowl with glad wrap then we added a light pebble to make  the glad wrap slope towards the centre, where a glass was positioned. Then we waited three and a half days (It didn't work as well as it could have because the bowl was too small and the jar was too big.) But we did get to drink some. Delicious. The water cycle purified the water!
